Human rights-campaigners defending the rights of the anti-social must be sick of the sight of 22-year-old Michael Carroll, "king of the chavs" and face of anti-social Britain 2005.

The Lotto Lout of Norfolk became something of a celebrity in 2002 when he won £9.7 million and proceeded to spend his winnings on cocaine, Stella Artois, Burberry clothes and demolition derbies in his back yard. The former dustman has made 35 appearances before the bar since, occasions that have become media events because Carroll never fails to give photographers his trademark greetings with his jewellery-laden hands, either the traditional archers' two-finger salute or the more universal index finger.

In the summer, Carroll received a brace of Asbos: the first, in June, dealt with a simple criminal damage matter, while another, in early August, banned Carroll from making abusive gestures to paparazzi. Under the headline "Giving The Finger Will Nail Pikey", the News of the World reported how making these offensive gestures within a 1,000 square mile radius of his Norfolk home could land him with up to five years in jail.
