I couldn't possibly let the award of this years Turner prize go without comment. Always interesting, frequently controversial and certainly rubbish, this year is no exception.
The winner, Simon Starling is an 'artist' specialising in 'installations'. His winning entry comprises a rotten old garden shed that he demolished, turned into a boat which he then paddled down the Rhine, before turning it back into a shed again.
On its own this sounds like a somewhat bizarre, but at least challenging and possibly interesting little project worthy of note. What I find the most astonishing is the simply breathtaking rubbish that commentators find to say about such an event.
The Curators at the Tate Gallery described the piece known as 'shedboatshed' as:
“a buttress against the pressures of modernity, mass production & global capitalism”
How on earth did they get there from here? It's a SHED.
They are not alone....The Times Art Critic Rachel Campbell-Johnson thinks that Starling’s work is multilayered …
“At his most ambitious, he entwines complex ideas with a sharp political point. But on a simple level, who does not understand what it means to sit in the creosoted peace of the shed & dream of sailing away on a boat”
Speechless. What a load of tosh. Pretentious twaddle doesn't even come close.
Now I recall that the word shed was used by yachties as a derogatory term to describe a crap sailing boat in which they would not wish to be seen dead. Mayby there is a deeper meaning after all - turning it back into a shed was probably a kindness.
