In an interesting item on the news tonight it seems the US embassy are refusing to pay the congestion charge in London, incurred by their vehicles. I didn't follow the story clearly, but apparently they cite the Declaration of Independance and the issue of 'no taxation without representation'; said charge is deemed as a 'tax' and not a 'charge' and hence not payable.
An interesting point of view: it is called a charge here in London. Truth is it is really another one of Toni's cronies stealth taxes. Without the stealth. And from first hand experience in the queue along the Embankment on a Friday night: it is not a complete success viz a viz a reduction in congestion either.
The subtle point here is the 'no taxation without representation' argument. One interviewee confirming this would be 'tyranny'. Quite. Welcome to London.
I wish our US cousins the Best of British.
You're going to need it.
